Trump placed Washington, D.C.'s police under federal control and deployed the National Guard

Trump invoked provisions of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act to place the Metropolitan Police Department under federal control and ordered National Guard troops into Washington, saying the measures were needed to restore law and public safety. The federal takeover of the local police department was highly unusual and immediately contested by D.C. officials and critics.
